Breakfast above the clouds on Madeira

Having breakfast above the clouds on Madeira is one of the island’s most iconic and memorable experiences.

The whole thing is weather-dependent, and the fog often obscures the view.  Still, at some point during your visit to Madeira, the conditions will be right to enjoy a spectacular sunrise.

Key Info on Madeira at Sunrise:

  • Pico do Areeiro is the most popular spot, and it gets VERY crowded.
  • You can drive yourself or book a guide to bring you to the peak.
  • The Savoy Palace offers the full sunrise breakfast experience from Funchal.

Tours to See the Sunrise on Madeira

You have a variety of guides and tour operators who make the trip daily from Funchal up to Pico do Areeiro before dawn.

These two options have excellent reviews:

Sunrise at Pico do Areeiro

Pico do Areeiro (also spelled Arieiro) is Madeira’s third-highest peak (1,818 meters or 5,965 feet).  It’s also the most popular location to experience a sunrise above the clouds.

Driving from Funchal might take half an hour. Get there early, since the large parking lots will be crowded! From there, you can view the sunrise from different viewpoints and ridgelines.

On clear mornings, you’ll be looking out over a blanket of clouds, with Pico Ruivo and Pico das Torres, the island’s two tallest peaks piercing through.

The crowds can be massive, so it’s important to arrive early to secure both a parking lot and a spot to view the sunrise from. You can see how crowded the trail can be from the parking lot.

Best Conditions for Sunrise Above the Clouds

I was impressed with the weather-predicting skills of the staff at the Savoy Palace who helped us out!   On their guidance, we shifted our “breakfast above the clouds” experience to a morning with a better forecast.  It worked perfectly, thanks to them!

In general, here are a few factors to consider:

  • Humidity and clear skies usually lead to the inversion, which creates the sea of clouds.
  • Summer and autumn tend to produce the most reliable inversions, but you can experience them all year. These photos were taken during our spring trip to Madeira in April/May.
  • The guides will take people up everyday, regardless of the weather.
  • Apps like Windy can help you preview the weather, and the IPMA webcams can give you a live look at conditions.

Can You Avoid the Crowds?

The short answer is: no.  You really won’t get much of an opportunity to experience the sunrise above the clouds alone.

If you book a breakfast experience with Savoy Signature, the driver will likely pull off in an area lower on the mountain, below where the hordes of people congregate.

In general, weekdays are less busy than weekends, as you’d expect.

And again, arriving well before sunrise will assure that you get a parking spot easily and don’t have to wait in the traffic jam.

The crowds will thin out as you hike farther down the trail.

After the sunrise, most people stick around to hike at least part of the trail down Madeira’s famous PR1 trail. While most of it remains closed by wildfire damage, a good portion is open to explore.

Wrap on Experiencing a Madeira Sunrise

While there’s not much solitude, if the weather cooperates, it’s worth dealing with the drive and the crowds to experience sunrise above the clouds. Crowds can be baked in to many of the experiences on Madeira, whether it’s the famous waterfalls, like Cascado dos Anjos or natural wonders like Sao Lourenco.

The crowds can be somewhat off-putting, but you can’t blame everyone for wanting to witness such a stunning sunrise.

Bring layers to wear, since it’s much cooler and windier on the peaks, compared to the coastal areas on Madeira.

Whether you go all out with a full breakfast, or just bring a thermos with coffee or tea, take your time and enjoy the experience.  Just make sure to arrive well before sunrise so you get to take it all in from before the initial glow!

After hiking around for a while, you’ll still have the whole day to road trip around the island and visit other towns on Madeira. Maybe you’ll be inspired to hike one of the island’s other peaks and trails, like Pico Grande. Or… maybe it’ll be the start of a relaxing day and a drive to the beautiful Quinta do Barbusano winery and vineyard.
