Madeira’s Best Views: Ponta de São Lourenço & the PR8 Trail

Hiking Madeira’s PR8 Trail, officially called Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço, will deliver some of the most stunning views of the island.
At the tip of Madeira’s easternmost peninsula, the popular trail will lead you to a mix of dramatic volcanic landscapes, sweeping ocean views, and unique color contrasts between the minerals in the soil, blues in the water, and greens on the land.

Trailhead Parking Options & Availability
The Ponta de São Lourenço trailhead is located at the end of the ER109 road, east of Madeira’s airport and the town of Canical.
There are two small parking lots, but for the most part, people will park along a lengthy stretch of roadway.
Parking is available on both sides, and while there are hundreds of spots, they’ll all fill up in the morning. A lot of people love coming to São Lourenço for the sunrise, or an early morning hike. I’d say: there are just as many cars here as there are at the other iconic Madeira “sunrise above the clouds” spot on Pico do Areeiro!
You’ll find a couple of food trucks and souvenir stands at the trailhead.

Pro Tip: Arriving midday, the morning visitors will be gone and you’ll have more parking options.
Ponta de São Lourenço Hiking Fee
As of January 2025, Madeira introduced a €3 fee for tourists over 12 years old to hike popular trails, including PR8.
Payments can be made on-site. We didn’t see officers checking for proof of payment here, but the sign says skipping it might result in a fine.
There’s a QR code on this sign at the trailhead to scan and pay, though the cell signal is spotty.

PR8 Trail Overview
Here are the basics. Generally, the trail isn’t overly steep, but it’s a pretty constant up-and-down the whole time.
This photo shows the trail following the slopes of the mountains near the trailhead.

The path is well-maintained, with wooden steps and railings in steeper areas.

It’s likely to be crowded near the trailhead, but as people tire out, the crowd thins and the hike becomes much more enjoyable!

Trail Details
- Distance: Approximately 7 km (4.3 miles) round trip.
- Duration: 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on pace and stops.
- Difficulty: Moderate. It’s hilly, but no special skills are required
- Trail Type: Out-and-back.
- Take Cover: There are no trees, so you’re exposed to the sun the whole time.

Viewpoints & Highlights at São Lourenço
What I love so much about this hike is that the views are constantly changing, and constantly jaw-dropping.
The trail winds through a windswept, semi-arid volcanic peninsula, a stark contrast to the lush greenery in the rest of Madeira. You’ll walk among dramatic cliffs, lava rock formations, and layered basalt.

The towering cliffs are surrounded by crashing waves along the rugged Atlantic coastline.

This area is a protected nature reserve home to wildflowers and nesting seabirds.
The Mid-Hike Cafe
You’ll find the Casa do Sardinha Sea Spot Cafe well into the hike. It’s open from 10:00am to 5:00pm. They serve a variety of sandwiches and drinks. It’s a great place to relax before you head back!
The Beach
One of the offshoots of the main trail will take you down to a rocky beach.

Next time I’ll bring a towel to relax on for a while on the beach. It’s a beautiful view, and very few people will be down there.

Weather & Best Time to Hike PR8
The trail is exposed with no shade, making early morning or late afternoon the best times to hike during the summer heat. These photos were taken during a visit to Madeira in the spring (April/May).
Madeira’s weather can be unpredictable, so check the forecast and bring layers to shed along the way. We went from cold to sweaty in minutes.

Hike São Lourenço / PR8: It’s Worth It!
The views at São Lourenço will make the parking hassle and the drive well worth it! It’s a “must stop” on a Madeira road trip!
While you could hike the whole trail in 2 to 3 hours, next time I go I’ll spend an entire day here. I’ll pack a towel to relax on the beach for a while, and plan to have lunch at the cafe.
If you’re looking for a far less-crowded trail on Madeira, try Pico Grande.
I love how lush and green Madeira is (especially since I live in the Arizona desert) but São Lourenço’s landscape stands out. It’s unique on an island full of natural beauty. While you’re visiting Madeira’s charming towns and the big city of Funchal, make time to spend some time in nature at this amazing site!
