Costa Rica is known for its stunning landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and friendly, welcoming people. While I think you’d have a good time visiting any time of year, December stands out as one of the best months for travelers.

In this blog post, we’ll delve into the reasons why you should consider visiting Costa Rica in December, covering everything from the weather to activities and practical tips for your trip.

I’ll also separate the information into different regions, which you can scroll to using the table of contents below.

Best Tours of Costa Rica in December

From experience, I’d definitely suggest renting a car in Costa Rica. The road signage is lacking, especially in San Jose, but otherwise the driving here is pretty easy. It’ll also allow you to explore more beaches, hikes, and other sites!

We usually use Discover Cars, since they include big international brands, and local rental agencies:

Where to Stay in Costa Rica

I have to admit: I’m partial to Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, even though it’s rainier and the December weather is better for the beaches on the Pacific Coast!

Here are a few of my favorite places to stay in the Puerto Viejo area:

Aguas Claras

The bungalows at Aguas Claras were some of the original beach homes on Playa Chiquita. The grounds are also beautiful, and you’ll have a private beach to enjoy.

Shawandha’s chalets are set back in 5 acres of the rainforest. Each is secluded, and made of natural materials, to blend into the surrounding forest.

Central: Finca Rosa Blanca

Finca Rosa Blanca is a beautiful property, close to San Jose. In addition to the hotel buildings, you’ll have access to the large coffee farm surrounding the property.
